I am always investing in great Danish mid century furniture for my customers here in Melbourne. As you can see from the southside danish website we can source great Danish sofas, teak and rosewood cabinets, sideboards and bookcases. Good mid century floor lamps and pendant lights also fit this categoy.
Danish mid century bed side tables on the other hand, are always in short supply. What did the Scandinaians do with their cups of tea, books, magazines and general bedside Paraphernalia?
One of my theories ( not tested) is that in the day the classic mid century bedhead came with built in bedside tables. They were not a stand alone set but instead built into the already substantial timber bed head. The market here and also oversaes for these pieces is tiny as our tastes for bedheads has truely moved on. Also, mattress sizes have also changed substantially from the 1960's which makes it even more complicated.
Another snippet of information from a customer who grew up in Sweeden told me bedrooms in the day were so compact their wasnt any space for accompaning bedside tables. The bed matteress would fit snuggly between each wall so forget about the luxury of a bedside table.
One of the interesting things is when bedsides do become available from a supplier in Denmark, the price premium on them due to their scarcity value makes places them out of reach for many of our customers. This means we need to look and harder for great deals on Danish bedside tables.
It has also meant we have begun to make our own mid century style bedsides in teak which can compliment the mid century style many of our customers are wanting.
